Asteroid defense

http://dotearth.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/02/20/can-humans-do-better-than-dinosaurs-when-it-comes-to-incoming-space-objects/

The article goes into depth about how one of the Apollo nine astronauts is working toward a way to block incoming space objects such as asteroids and meteors. They outline the problems they are having and what could happen in the near future. One of the big problems is the division of nations and the financial cost.

I feel this has potential to be an important issue as recently Russia was hit on feb. 15 (and back in 1909 that destroyed a large forest) that caused widespread damage. The best theory for the downfall of the dinosaurs is indeed a large asteroid that caused mass extinction. Should we fail to do this, all life could face extinction regardless of foreign policy and economic standing.

  1. I wonder who is the first to take the big step in this defense, and how would they start it? At what point would they say we can handle this size meteor?

  2. Interesting, a defense against asteroids or a planetary defense.

  3. This is a very interesting thing to think about. This could become very useful like you said to protect us, but could also be seen as a weapon to other countries. Could cause problems but oh well!
