Bringing the Exinct Back to Life

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/03/19/science/earth/research-to-bring-back-extinct-frog-points-to-new-path-and-quandaries.html?ref=science&_r=0

This article explains the vision scientists have of reintroducing extinct animals back into the world. They almost succeeded once in 2003, when a goatlike creature was born, but it only lived for a matter of minutes. One way of doing this is by backbreeding, that is breeding a certain species that carries its ancestors DNA together in hopes of eventually breeding a close replica of the extinct creature. Another is to, for example, bring elephants that are resistant to the cold in hopes of creating another wooly mammoth. They don't want to bring back the reptilian dinosaurs, just those that died 200,000 years ago, such as saber tooth tigers, giant ground sloths, and wooly mammoths.

As I find this idea fascinating, I can't help but feel as if this would not be a good idea. There is a reason why they went extinct, and I don't want giants ruling the earth again. Bringing back these monsters of the past will drastically change modern day Earth. To me, this article shows the brilliance of scientists and how they have succeeded. They can create embryos, even if they do die. They have had one success that lasted a few minutes after birth, but that's the start. What worries me is what if they do succeed? When will the stop after their success? Sometimes, I think scientists only focus on the bigger image and doing something huge rather than the reality of the situation.

  1. Jurassic Park all over again. I think it would be better to bring back animals that have gone extinct as a result of human development such as the Tasmanian Tiger (Devil is still around).

  2. I think it would be neat to what once inhabited the earth before and how it will react to the new temperatures on earth as well as the pollutants that are in our every day lives that we have grown used to. I wonder if they will adapt immediately or die off after a few years.

  3. I think that this is a little scary along with being exciting. With technology advancing, who knows what people could bring back. HOpefully noone will bring back dinosaurs in the future. Also I think that if people bring back the species that they casued to go extinct, they may casue them to go extinct yet again if they bring them back, or keep them in a zoo as exibits, which is not much better.

  4. This would be sweet if it could happen, just imagine seeing a dodo bird walking around.

  5. I would love to be able to see something that was previously extinct but hopefully these scientists learn from the Jurassic Park movies and don't go overboard.
