Sun Storm Forecast

Scientists said a solar eruption was detected on March 5, 2013, and was headed toward Mars.

I chose the article in the New York Times that talked about the Sun's storm forecast. There is a possibility that the next solar storm that erupts could hit Earth. In 1859 a solar storm hit earth and made the electrical wires spark which shocked the telegraph operators and caught the papers around them on fire. If such a storm hit Earth now it would cause much more damage like causing continental black outs for days, weeks, or even shortages for years. This is crazy to me. I never knew that storms that were happening on the sun were sending protons and electrons towards Earth causing problems. I cant even imagine having a blackout for a week. This would cause many problems.

  1. crazy to think that in instant that every thing we know and trust in can be destroyed by the sun in an instance.

  2. With as much technology as we rely on a on a daily basis it would be a scary thing to see what would happen during one of these storms again. It would possibly cause many fires because of all the wires that are ran through our homes.

  3. I agree that if a solar storms hits today with all the technology we have, it would be devastating.

  4. Imagine how many people could possibly be killed if it disrupted the electronics on commercial airliners around the world and caused some of them to crash. That is just one horrible thing that could happen as a result of a brutal solar sotrm hitting earth.

  5. Solar flares have always had (at any moment ever) the ability to hit the Earth or any other planet. But, as with the technology today being much more advanced I can see the massive problems with our slow down in technology if we ever got hit.

  6. Yes,today we have way more problems that could come up than in 1859. They barely had electric back then, now we have tons of wires and electronics that people rely so much on. Heating and cooling would be the main problem though. If it is the middle of winter, or summer, and people do not have air conditioning/heat then their could be some major health problems, especially if it was out for more than a week. (Remember the electric outages in california that caused heat stokes because people are not used to the 90+ degree wheather).
