Not This Pig Exploration

“Unfortunately as it developed in the late 1970’s, cable became wedded to the idea of niche marketing -of milking every audience segment with targeted advertising.”

It is somewhat troubling that we endure so much marketing inside of our entertainment. To watch television requires us to be exposed (in most cases) to advertisements for products and services. In many ways this might just be a necessary evil. Even today’s new content mediums, like Hulu and YouTube aren’t immune to this type of revenue stream. Of course these forms of media contain ads that are even more tailored to individual consumers. In a way the niche cable channels could only dream of. This was almost inevitable for a company like Hulu, which is owned by the major networks. Perhaps tailored advertising can be okay. If you have to sit through ads, they could at least be products you would actually consider buying. At this point in my life I’m not interested in membership with AARP.

  1. Great choice of a quote! I could not agree more with you. Advertising is almost gotten out of hand. Its just crazy to think that a television program thats supposed to be a half hour is really only 22 minutes because we have to sit through 8 minutes of commercials. It seems like this is getting worse every year. Like you said I don't really want a membership from AARP and why in the heck would anybody take Cialis, there seems to be more side affects compared to the original problem at hand lol.

  2. You got that right. Everything has ads. Even while doing this assignment, I am seeing ads. I also have the same mentality when it comes to watching advertisements; they are tolerable if, and only if, I would actually consider.

  3. Great Quote. I do not like sitting through boring ads on TV but sometimes if I'm on Youtube, it will actually select an ad that I enjoy since it monitors the types of videos that I watch.

  4. Very true. I don't like ads on TV at all because they never apply to me, but I don't mind ads on YouTube and similar sites that ask you "is this ad relevant?" because if it's not, I don't ever have to see it again.

  5. You picked a good quote. I agree with you, but also think that some types of advertising companies can influence the messages that the actual video/movie represnts too, and this can be harmful. The people who give the money to the shows we watch, or the radio stations we listen to, have control over these things because they dont want to lose their financial support.
