Test Tube Burgers

The article I looked up was about an idea to grow meat in laboratories. There has been thought over this for many years and the scientific technology has advanced enough for it to become a possibility now. There are many issues brought up with it though. A few are the moral aspects, some people do not believe we should take that step forward and make our selves "Godlike". They think it would be almost as bad as creating life. Other things people are concerned about are that they do not know if the meat could protect itself from viruses, etc. that animals immune system can do, so people could easily get diseases. If scientists used chemicals to stop the harmful aspects, then people are also concerned that those also could also be harmful, if not more harmful.
Some people also think that it would be healthier though because the meat would not be exposed to as many things as animals are in their environment.Another aspect going for "in vitro" meat, (made in a petri dish) is that it would get rid of the need of slaughter houses and killing animals for meat. Many animals are abused and killed inhumanely for the sake of making a profit because their is a high demand for meat.
I think this would be interesting to try. I am all for stopping slaughter, but the thing I would be concerned about is whether it tastes the same. I love the taste of meat, like chicken nuggets and steak, so I hope they could prefect the taste, or maybe make it even better.

  1. I really want to see this idea carried out. It would not only safe a bunch of animals that are basically tortured on farms, but if they perfected the taste then nobody would even notice the difference.

  2. I think that this technology would be absolutely great and could help tens-of thousands of people in third world countries who are starving.

  3. Unlike you, I wouldn't like to try this. I agree with the people who are worried about a decreased immune system, and if the chemicals used to fix this problem would be more harmful to us. Though, I think this is an interesting idea, I don't think this would benefit us.

  4. This would be interesting to see how this would turn out if this becomes common place. The very idea seems kind of repulsive on one hand, but humane on the other. No easy answer I guess.

  5. The thought of growing meat in labs sounds really disgusting to me and doesn't sound very appealing to me. I prefer the old fashion way of getting our meat. I want real meat, not artificial meat. But I guess I would have to try it before I shot the idea down.

  6. This article is gross! It reminds me in a way of The Jungle by Upton Sinclair... Which also ruined meat for me. Go vegetarians!

    1. It surprises me that a vegetarian would find this idea repulsive. Are you a vegetarian because you think meat is gross or because of concern about the well-being of animals?

  7. I find this idea interesting because no matter how perfectly we could copy meat, there would still be people who refuse to eat "non-organic foods". Today these people are respected in a sense for discouraging the release of harmful chemicals into the environment. But in a future where most food in created in a lab, the people who insist on eating naturally made food might be considered killers. It's a strange thought.

In my own opinion though, I would love to try this idea. I would be willing to eat any food that tastes good and is relatively healthy. I do worry though, if we don't need to raise cows and pigs for food anymore, what will happen to them? PETA may have visions in their head of previously domestic animals running free through the wilderness, but in reality I worry that these species of domesticated "meat" animals might become endangered.

    1. I have kind of thought about this idea too (of the domesticated animals becoming endangered). If their is no need for them then people might dispose of them and let them into the wild, and many of them are not used to the wilderness so they would probably die :(

  8. Growing food in test tubes sounds very strange, but if it works everybody should give a try than I think.

  9. This article is Delicious! What's the difference between this and Burger King?

  10. This idea has a lot of pros and cons. For the most part it would be great to further this exploration. It would offer more food to the starving, which is a huge issue in this day. Because of this I support the idea to make lab meat.
